Set in the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian regime that has overthrown the U.S government and due to environmental disasters and declining birthrates, fertile women, called Handmaids, are forced into reproductive servitude for the ruling elite.  The story follows Offred - a Handmaid assigned to a high-ranking Commander and his wife, Serena Joy - as she navigates life under Gilead's harsh rules.
